Over 80 individuals received certificates following the conclusion of the Rural Transformation Unit backyard gardening project.

A closing ceremony was held on 9th August at Frenches House, where participants were awarded certificates as proof of their achievement in completing the program.

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Transformation, Forestry & Fisheries, Hon. Saboto Caesar, addressed the importance of backyard gardening as part of a broader vision to reduce hunger and undernourishment in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. "In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, we have a target where we want to be the first recognised state in the world to reduce hunger and undernourishment to zero," the Minister said in his remarks at the closing ceremony.

The Minister also encouraged farmers to approach backyard gardening as a business venture. "I want to encourage you, a very important business can come out of this, because we don't have to wait on the Government alone to produce seedlings to sell. If you are doing backyard gardening, you can also ask the ministry to assist you as to how to set seeds for resale," Minister Caesar added.

Tools were also donated to the farmers as part of efforts to encourage them to continue backyard small scale farming.

The Backyard Gardening Project was facilitated by the Rural Transformation Unit, in collaboration with the Basic Needs Trust Fund. The program was implemented to encourage farmers to grow their own food for improved food security, and enhancing the livelihoods of households, by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge in backyard gardening.
