The Forestry Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Rural Transformation, said that there were three reported cases of river poisoning over the Easter weekend.
Mr. Bradford Latham, Forestry Officer with responsibility for Law Compliance, said that two of these cases, which occurred in Marriaqua and in Georgetown, were deemed accidental.
Speaking on the National Broadcasting Corporation’s 'Face-to-Face' programme on 24th April, Mr. Latham said that the Department responded promptly to the reports, in an effort to ensure human safety. He further stated that the two accidental contaminations were as a result of mishaps with cement.
He added that the third reported case was in the Stubbs area, which seemed to have been deliberately done, and that they would be looking closely at that area.
Mr. Latham applauded members of the communities for their part in monitoring the nation’s rivers.
