Vincentians have been urged to get into the habit of growing their own food at home.

This encouragement comes from the CEO of the Zero Hunger trust fund Safiya Horne Bique.

She was speaking on NBC Radio about the “National Home and Community Gardens Food Security Project”.

Horne said the project which provides seedlings for backyard gardens, has the potential to alleviate the financial burden of high food prices.

"I am a firm believer in this, I don't buy food because I grow it and a lot of persons don't understand the savings you have when you grow your own food. I have my backyard squatted with a lot of fruits trees, I have my little vegetable patch, I have my little goat, my little chickens, I have all of that in my backyard because we try to grow our own food. So, there's a lot of savings from growing your own food that can be invested in other things, and this is what we want persons to know and to understand how they can help themselves by growing their own food."
