Vincentians are being urged to support local fishermen and fishing activities.

The president of the National Fisherfolk Organization, Winsbert Harry, states that fostering a greater appreciation for fish is vital for the sustainability of the fishing industry, which serves as a primary livelihood for many coastal communities.

Harry points out that the NFO is actively working to cultivate a taste and appreciation for fish among the population.

"And we need more people to eat more fish, support the fisherfolk, support fishing activities. We need to see how we can get fishing go back within the community itself to engage the community. We need the community onboard because you know there's four (4) striving community. When you look at the fishing community of Barrouaille, they heavily depend on Blackfish and porpoise and all kind of fish in Barrouaille. If you go to one of the striving communities which is Clare Valley, Clare Valley is one of the most, when you need a fisherfolk you can go to Clare Valley, Clare Valley solely depends on fish."

Harry explains that the NFO is actively working to support fishers still facing the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

He says the organization intends to incorporate more fish-related events into the national calendar to enhance appreciation for fish, not only for food security, but also for the many job opportunities the sector offers.

"National Organization will continue to see how we could look for funding, we have not received anything as yet, we would see how we would partner with the government, to see how we could reach out to the person. Every little corner of Saint Vincent that they into we have to reach every affected fisher with assistance so they can get back to their livelihood. We have to see how we could go into the community and see how we could have fishing activities, fish night, fishing day, get fish fun day and make sure we see fishing on the calendar so that persons can see really fishing is it."
