The consistent application of science in the nation’s Agricultural Industry, will result in the positive growth of the sector.
Speaking at a recent ceremony, Agriculture Minister, Honourable Israel Bruce, said when the relevant information is collected and documented and the use of science is applied, he is confident that the nation’s farmers will see improvements to their production.
"They would collate that data so that if there is to be, lets say, a tropical storm, we could tell which of the spacing arrangements did or dasheen stand up best with. Was it the 3 x 3, was it 1 x 5, was it the 2 x 2? So that farmers could then know that because we are in a prone natural disaster area, this is the best spacing with fertilizer application. If the application of science consistently that would do two things: 1- help the farmers to maximize or optimize production and yield and at the same time encourage and invite young children."
Minister Bruce added that when the nation’s youths see the positive developments taking place within the sector, they will be drawn to careers in agriculture.
"So the students, there are room for you in agriculture, and we are going to further create that opportunity for you to advance in agriculture. We need people who are going to do the farming accounts. So as an accountant, you working with farmers to help to make sure to help to make sure that they can keep the books. They could determine whether or not a particular production on the farm is profitable or not and why is it wasn't profitable. Was it the over application of fertilizer? The research will help to inform that. So we are looking at a holistic approach to agriculture and I think that's where the future is going to go."
