The Rural Transformation Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation officially concluded its ROOTS: Youth in Agriculture Summer Camp 2026 with a closing ceremony held at the Girl Guides Association Headquarters on Friday, July 31st, 2026.
Approximately forty-five (45) children completed the two-week programme, which ran from July 20th to 31st. Throughout the programme, participants were exposed to techniques in modern agriculture, including artificial intelligence in agriculture, grafting, home garden design, soil analysis, drip irrigation, hydroponics, livestock production, value-added food processing, agro-based crafting, and digital content creation. Participants also took part in educational field visits and recreational activities.
During the closing ceremony, participants reflected on the valuable knowledge they gained, the friendships they formed, and the memorable experiences they shared throughout the programme. Awards were also presented for the Best TikTok Video Competition, with participants receiving first-, second-, and third-place trophies in recognition of their creativity. Remarks were delivered by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation, Hon. Israel Bruce; Chief Agricultural Officer (Ag), Marcus Richards; Permanent Secretary, in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation (Ag), Colville King; and Research Officer within the Rural Transformation Unit, Nesta Stoddard-Henry, who commended the students on their interest in agriculture and encouraged further participation in the field.
The ROOTS: Youth in Agriculture Summer Camp, implemented by the Rural Transformation Unit in collaboration with POSHELLE, aimed to equip participants with practical agricultural knowledge, entrepreneurial skills, and exposure to innovation and technology in modern farming. The Ministry continues to encourage greater youth involvement in agriculture through initiatives like this.
